The men’s Chabot College baseball team put on a great, complete performance on March 17th. Going past San Francisco with a score of eight runs to two. With strong hitting and aggressive baserunning, they focused on securing a shutdown from the bullpen. The Glads collected 10 hits and stole 11 bases, building up their lead while holding the Rams scoreless in eight of the nine innings. Chabot struck first in the second inning, starting hot when Braden Spade drove in Terrell Scott Roman with a groundout.
The Gladiators kept the pressure on in the third inning. Riley Winchell doubled and later scored on a single from a designated hitter, Joseph Coupland, who finished the afternoon with three hits and two RBIs in the 4th inning. Chabot cracked the game wide open as Elijah Cernak lined an RBI single to score Spade, as Coupland followed behind with a running score double that brought home Evan Wahilani Yau, making the score 4-0.
The Rams threatened the Glads in the 5th by cutting the deficits to 4-2 with a couple of RBI singles from Isaac Mendoza and Sean Lee, but that would be as close as they would ever get to making a bigger threat. Carlos Hernandez’s performance completely silenced the Rams offense, who also had 4.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.
Chabot secured their lead by adding insurance in the 7th inning as Jonathan Shepherd scored on a sacrifice fly from Joshua Heard. Then in the 8th, Winchell doubled home to Cernak and then stole home moments later. During the edgy play that pushed the lead to 7-2. Heard kept the scoring on in the ninth with a solo home run, which was the second RBI of that day. The Glad’s offense was in a great rhythm this evening, as Windshield went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, and a stolen base. Coupland delivered three hits with two RBIs and two steals as Cernak added two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base, while Spade contributed a double, an RBI, and a run score, as a total of 9 different players swiped and hit the bag for Chabot. On the mound, starter Chase McGill set the tone with three scoreless innings, and despite a brief stumble in the fifth, the bullpen combined for eight strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs. With the 8–2 victory, Chabot put together an all-around great team effort on the road, utilizing their aggressiveness on the bases to their advantage.
