Now I’m not very open about what I do but I’ve been told “to be cringe is to be free” so I’m here to talk about rhythm games since they are one of my favorite genres of games ever.
When I was young I got my first ever console being a PlayStation 3 and the person who sold it to my father gave us both his Guitar Hero 3 controllers which was cool, did I ever use them? No I was too stupid for that but I liked imaging I was playing on an unconnected Guitar Hero controller.
Eventually something hit me when a little while ago that I never got to play the game with the intended controllers nor do they make Guitar Hero titles anymore. So I resorted to questionable alternates.
I had gotten into the Persona series and learnt they had rhythm games for Persona 3 4 and 5 which featured new music videos (MV’s) and remixes of tracks from each respective game. I played Persona 3 Dancing In Moonlight the most as Persona 3 is my favorite of the franchise. I had fun with them all but I made the effort to 100% Persona 3 Dancing and get the platinum trophy on PlayStation.
For a while that was all I played for a long while and even went for Full Combo’s (FC’s) and got in a competitive mindset for those FC’s. Eventually I got a laptop and got to play Osu and I got to play it for a while. I liked playing any song from anime’s or other songs internet users uploaded and chatted onto Osu.
Osu is pretty fun and I’d even say it’s perfect for a beginner wanting to start out the genre but depending on what game mode you choose your hands could end up hurting. Osu’s normal game mode is where you click on the circles on the beat of the song, the other mode is clicking keys on your keyboard on time as presented, some songs go up to 8 keys but that’s only for people who are dangerously good at Osu.
There are games that are only available through arcades like Round One and other places like conventions like Genesis and others. Those games play fine. You just need some decent reaction time and sometimes the ability to read Japanese because some arcade games weren’t translated to English. However the controls are still understandable but don’t underestimate the difficulty you’ll wind up looking lost.
The game I play the most nowadays is Hatsune Miku Project Diva MegaMix+ on Steam as I’ve poured 100+ hours into the game. Now it isn’t as big as games like Osu where players make the charting for songs but the modding community for Project Diva is one of my favorites as it can include new outfits for characters, customizable User Interfaces or even just add songs to the game that weren’t added to the game from previous games or newer vocaloid songs.
My drive to play these sorts of games is not only because I like the song I’m playing but also because I have fun and I want that FC. I may not be good at rhythm games but playing these types of games makes me feel a joy that I can’t explain.
