Potential As Endless As The Galaxy

The Super Mario Galaxy is a movie that was definitely released in theaters on April 1st and it for sure made me look like a fool upon leaving.

I wasn’t able to see this movie on release as I was in a different country at the time so I had to wait around a week and a half and I think that made it worse. I was fairly excited but cautiously when they announced that the movie was based on the Super Mario Galaxy game from the Nintendo Wii and that game is mine and along other’s favorite Mario games in the franchise for many reasons. For my reasons it’s the game play and Rosalina’s story.

I am a big fan of Rosalina as her story in Super Mario Galaxy was amazing. I default to her in the Mario spinoff games (Mario Kart and such) She’s my most played Mario franchise character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate so you could say I’m pretty attached to her. I walked out of this movie feeling like I just got robbed and beaten which is exactly what happened figuratively.
Rosalina in the movie had like a total of 5 minutes of screentime and she barely got to do anything because she was kidnapped by Bowser Jr at the very beginning.

So okay cool the main character of Super Mario Galaxy is gone for 99% of the movie but what is worse? That’s right Fox McCloud from Star Fox shows up and gets actual scenes, dialogue and chemistry with the main cast of the movie. StarFox hasn’t had a game since Star Fox Zero for the Wii U in 2016. If they really wanted to get this character a movie or attention do it through other means and not the the Super MARIO Galaxy movie, give him a game or his own movie so you could imagine a bit of my frustration seeing as screen time that could’ve been given to Rosalina went to a character not from this franchise.

The pacing was questionable at best is it was kind of zooming past everything and sometimes added unneeded action scenes as an example: in the movie’s third quarter Bowser Jr shoots a babyifier at Mario and crew and it hits Mario, Luigi and Toad while Fox McCloud fixes the ship and it creates a scene where Yoshi runs away from the dinosaur and shoots it with the age regressing gun. It felt pointless that it only existed to serve as a giant flag that says “REMEMBER YOSHI’S ISLAND? WE MADE THAT”. Forgot to mention that Yoshi fellow has been here the entire movie.

The “final boss” segment starts to happen and the movie uses Bowser Jr’s abilities from Super Mario Wonder which I will say looked impressive on the big screen so I will give them that. I guess to sling out my positives right here and now I liked how they handled Bowser and Bowser JR’s relationship, Mario and Luigi were a fun duo the entire movie and I appreciate that they gave Princess Peach a bit more to do this movie compared to the last one.

The movie ended and I felt the disappointment sink in that they did nothing with the character I was here for. A character that is known for her Cosmic abilities got kidnapped by a 6 year old pilot a mech and was unable to do anything for the whole movie. I couldn’t believe it.

Tom Lothian adds “this movie was so boring that I had fallen asleep and when I woke up I left the theater immediately” which honestly that’s fair as it felt like there wasn’t any stakes when the person who got captured is barely explored and relies on you to know them from their games and yet they spit in your face anyways because they changed Rosalina’s backstory.

When asking people their thoughts on the movie I noticed that not a lot of people saw the movie and I instead asked why they haven’t seen the movie as I asked Chabot student Alliyah in that subject “I hate illumination and my hatred of illumination is stronger than my love of Nintendo so I figured it would be mid plot wise and spend a lot of time nostalgia baiting the audience” which I promptly told them they did exactly that and

Then on May 6 2026 they announced a Star Fox 64 remake for the Nintendo Switch 2 and it made me have an epiphany. They included Fox McCloud to the younger audience invested in him so they would buy this game. They ruined the movie for 50 bucks and a remake figuratively speaking.

Overall I felt disappointed but I’m happy for those Star Fox fans who are ready to play the same story for the 4th time.
