The Summer Of Gaming

Enrique Pena Ponce. \\ May 29, 2026.
It’s summer and many people that are like me know it’s games reveal season. It has been a long time tradition for gaming to reveal new games in the early summer for quite some time.

Back when E3 was a thing all the major and some smaller companies used to band together to have consecutive game reveals like on Friday it would be Nintendo’s day with their panel and the next would be Microsoft with their Xbox reveals. However things started to look down for E3 in the late 2010’s.

Not only was PlayStation dropping out of E3 but here comes the thing we know that ruined a lot of things, COVID-19 spread and we spent the year in our homes and that meant for E3 that they had to refund any tickets bought but also made an online version of the E3 2022 venue which worked for that one singular time but it wasn’t the last of E3’s troubles.

In December of 2023 it was announced that E3 would cease to function following that E3 didn’t have an event for 2022 or 2023 so some people saw it coming but it was a shock to the gaming space. But without E3 now what? Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest was practically E3’s successor as it followed almost the same schedule. Every summer it would practically feel the same except there was no waiting for other companies at their panel’s, whatever gets revealed on SGF (Summer Game Fest) is what is revealed there is no day 2 but in SGF’s case there was barely a venue to attend.

SGF happens in the Peacock Theatre in LA but you just watch what is a livestream in person so it isn’t as interactive as E3. Following the reasons for E3’s collapse, major gaming companies realized that they can also do what Nintendo was doing, which was to do a livestream to reveal games every now and then even outside the summer season. So now everyone does their own version of a Nintendo Direct as we we have Sony’s State of Play and Microsoft’s Xbox Game Showcase.

But that was all the past and to focus on the future for a second this summer is looking like the closest we’ve had to an E3 since its cancellation. Summer Game Fest is a week away but Sony and Microsoft have their presentations in the same week as SGF which to my memory this is the first time in some years that the gaming corporation are revealing this much for their games in a while.

My last piece of thinking is I hope everyone who cares about these streams gets something out of it in just hoping for more news on Persona 4 Revival.
