This year has been full of anniversaries as it was the previously covered Pokémon’s 30th but also the Persona franchise’s 30th anniversary this year alongside The Legend of Zelda and Mario’s. But one game reached its first decade and it’s the 2016 Game Of The Year winner Overwatch.
Overwatch is a first person hero shooter game where every character has unique abilities and have different playstyles based on their playstyle.
Overwatch was a smash hit when it first released in 2016 as it gathered 7 million players in its first week of release and generated 1 billion dollars of revenue in its first year. Before it turned free to play Overwatch had sold 50 million copies worldwide.
The game released with 21 characters on launch including iconic characters like Winston, Tracer, D.Va, Genji and Mercy among other popular characters part of the 21. What made these characters so loveable from the start is their personalities shining through them at every instance it can. Like for example Tracer is playful and optimistic and that is shown through her line’s like when she uses her ultimate which is a sticky pulse bomb she’ll say lines like “Winging it!’ “Thought of you!”. Even the pre match character interactions that get more additions every now and then which has worldbuilding and comedic lines through characters make them charming.
As the game grew so did the roster as the game now has increased over double the original size as the game features 51 playable characters with the newest being the Damage hero Sierra.
The game was all the rage at release as it had media attention as many celebrities have mentioned they played the game like Terry Crews who wanted to voice Doomfist before he was made playable, Luka Dončiċ who is consistencly Top 500 players in Overwatch known for playing Roadhog and Cassidy. He would later have a collaboration with Overwatch last year granting players 77 loot boxes for an event called “Play like Luka”
While the game has had its ups and downs there are moments that define what this game meant to people even through its toughest meta’s like GOATS (Go All Tanks & Supports) and double shield before the game turned 5v5.
People have stayed with this universe for more reasons than I can count but I just have to talk about what this game’s know for. It’s cinematics, Overwatch’s cinematic are basically short films focusing on a character that explains why they fight for in this universe. If you haven’t seen any I heavily recommend Reinhardt’s “Honor and Glory” Genji and Hanzo’s “Dragons” Mei’s “Rise and shine” and finally but not least Winston’s “Are you with me?”
