Did you even know Chabot College has a TV Station? That’s right! Chabot College has had a TV station running for over 40 years! Apart from the Newspaper Chabot’s TV Station plays a huge part in sharing valuable information for its students and community. Now, if you’re not a big reader but want to stay updated and know more about your school, Chabot News is the perfect place to tune into. Although Chabot News has been a part of the college for quite some time now, it’s in fact surprisingly unknown by more than half of the students, but the real question is why?
Journalism will always have a prominent place in society due to its consumers being the general public, but when it comes to student journalism, who are the consumers it depends on? If it weren’t for the students themselves, student journalism would slowly die.
Now, how would you feel if said tragedy were to be happening on your very own campus? Between the 90s and 2010s college news became more and more favored by students, but with the rise of social media and a shift in generations, there is now a drastic decline in college news viewership. Along with many other colleges and universities, Chabot College is right in the middle of the decline, which can be seen in the decline of their TV Stations audience.
The students of the Mass Communication department depend on the participation from their fellow students and teachers to not only create the news but also to learn essential skills for their career paths. I spoke to jasmine Bester a student in the Television class about why it is important for students to tune into Chabot News,
“I think that students should tune into Chabot News because it’s supporting the students who want a career in journalism and we’re broadcasting real life news. We have a partnership with CNN where they we have a license to use their content to supplement and use in Chabot News, on top of the original work that we do ourselves.”
The Chabot News Station is made up of a team of Mass Communication students learning everyday tasks that are important to understand if working in the news or mass media. The team is made up of producers, directors, anchors, editors, technicians, and of course your writers. With such a motivated team, Chabot News is able to come out with new episodes weekly, delivering essential and entertaining news to its community.

“You get a lot of information that you might not get elsewhere. It’s more informative, and it’s student-based, so you hear from people around your own age.” – Mickail Dolger
I followed the process from pre-production to see what it really takes for a news to come together in the studio. After hours of writing scripts, preparing graphics, and planning the rundown, the team brings it all together in the studio. It takes a total of 11 people for production, with 5 people in the downstairs studio with all the fancy lights and cameras, and 6 people upstairs at the control boards, sounds, and multi-cam screens for the directors and producers to observe the anchors and on-screen talents.
“We might cover some topics that aren’t as big as what they cover on national television, like we did today, a bad bunny look-alike contest, you won’t see that on ABC.” – TV student Enrique Pena Ponce
Whether it’s national news, entertainment, or campus news, all the stories are particularly chosen by the writers to inform and update Chabots community.
