The Chabot Gladiators dropped to 1–2 after a 3–0 shutout loss to the Sacramento City College Panthers on Jan. 27 on Chabot’s home field. Even with eight hits and strong early energy, Chabot couldn’t break through against the Sac City Panthers pitchers that finished with 13 strikeouts and didn’t allow a single walk.
Chabot’s right fielder, Terrell Scott‑Romain, opened the afternoon with a base hit in the first inning, setting what looked like a promising tone for the offense. But Sacramento City quickly turned a double play, and from that point on, Chabot struggled to capitalize on its opportunities.
Sac City scored in the third inning with an RBI double from Hayden Shoup, followed by another RBI single from Cody Ferrante to make it 2–0. In the sixth inning, a sacrifice RBI extended the lead to 3–0, which held throughout the rest of the game.
Chabot had chances to respond, Jonathan Sheppard and Luca Boccasile each recorded two hits, and Scott‑Romain added a triple later in the game, but the Gladiators couldn’t bring a run home, and Sacramento City’s pitching controlled the pace from start to finish. As Ned Frutchey threw 6 scoreless innings, which is actually pretty impressive.
Chabot’s pitching lineup kept the game within reach. Daniel Velichko allowed two earned runs in 2.1 innings, Sean Cannon followed with 2.2 scoreless frames, and Brayden Gijbels and Carlos Hernandez combined for four innings with only one unearned run allowed. Despite the strong pitching, the offense couldn’t bring runners home, including a key chance with a runner on third in the fourth inning.
After the game, Scott‑Romain spoke about the team’s energy and how it shifted as the innings went on. He said, “In the beginning, innings one through five, the energy was really high. But I felt it start to drop toward the end of the game, and that’s not usually Chabot baseball. That’s something we need to work on. The up‑and‑down energy isn’t going to cut it.”
The Gladiators won’t have to wait long for a chance to respond. They face Sacramento City again this Jan. 29, giving Chabot an opportunity to even the series and chase a revenge win on the road.
